Lords of the Samurai Exhibition

The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco commissioned Kerry Marshall to re-create the interior of a Samurai period house for the use within their education gallery. The project included two Douglas Fir shoji screen which opened upon a photo mural of a Japanese garden; an adjoining Tokonoma (alcove) with 'Sinker' Redwood staggered shelves and small Tansu; and a surrounding tatami mat floor with a wood border. This will be used throughout the summer as an educational experience.

The Power of 6 exhibition is a rare opportunity to view the work of over 60 Mendocino coast artist. Within the historic Odd Fellows Hall in the village of Mendocino, the Mendocino Coast Furnituremakers is joining with the Artist Cooperative of Mendocino; Edgewater Gallery, Northcoast Artist Gallery, Partners Gallery, and Three Rivers Studios to present a selection of paintings, sculpture, furniture and jewelry.
An opening reception will be held July 20th from 5pm to 7 pm. Please come meet the artist and share in this celebration of the artist and artisans of the Mendocino coast.

Caspar, CA September 19, 2006. Paul Reiber will be showing his recent sculpture at the William Zimmer Gallery in Mendocino CA opening second Saturday, October 14 and running through November 26.
Featured will be works including the Ancestor Series and several larger figurative works in wood exploring war, parenting and destiny. The Ancestor Series pieces are tall, thin figures three to four feet in height with a somewhat other worldly appearance. Paul sees them as reminders of our responsibilities to both the past and the future of life on this planet.
Paul Reiber, a Caspar sculptor and studio furnituremaker, has lived on the north coast since attending the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking program in 1981. His work has been widely shown and collected nationally and internationally. Paul enjoys working in collaboration with clients to design pieces that reflect their spiritual values by using images containing personal meaning to them. He is available for commissions and instruction in carving
Sculpture by Paul Reiber wins top awards at California State Fair

Caspar, CA September 12, 2006 "Where We Live" a sculpture by Paul Reiber and commissioned by a local couple won top awards at this years California State Fair. The work, depicting regional animals and carved in nutmeg, a little known north coast conifer, won Best of Division, Best of Show, and First place in the California Creative Arts Competition as well as the Peoples Choice Award, sponsored by Woodworker West Magazine.
The Sculpture approximately 48" x 32" x10" features depictions of a raven, a human, a bear and a seal in a vertical column resting on a swirling mass of salmon. The concept for the piece grew out of extensive dialogue with the couple commissioning the sculpture to reflect their love and concern for our local environment and a sense of place and belonging on the north coast of California.
Paul Reiber, a Caspar sculptor and studio furnituremaker, has lived on the north coast since attending the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking program in 1981. His work has been widely shown and collected nationally and internationally. Learn the art of “Shoji” (a paper, wooden-lattice screen) design and construction. Kerry will present an introduction of the art of Shoji, with examples of his current work. Students will develop designs for a 18” by 30” single shoji screen.(one that can hang within a window or be designed to be free standing).. All steps of construction will be introduced and demonstrated before students start into the building of their individual screens. Additional time will be set aside to explore the variety of paper and alternative materials that can be used to cover a Shoji screen. Open to all levels of experience in woodworking. Materials fee.

The exhibition will run from Novemebr 22 to December 18, 2005. A reception for the artist will be held December 2, 2004, from 5 to 8 PM. The artist will be available to answer questions and tell the stories that brought each of the work to life. "Wood Meets Glass" is an unique exhibition of artists whose work is created on and inspred by the beauty of the north coast of California.

In the afternoon, the gardens were turned into a showcase of Mendocino artisanry, with woodworkers and coopers demonstrating their crafts. Locally made furniture included reproductions of 18th century wine cabinets, creative wine display racks, rocking chairs and secretary's desks. Many pieces were made from old red wine barrels, proving that Mendocino is not only committed to sustainable agriculture and organic winemaking, but to recycling in every sense of the word
