Coston Bench
by: Taimi Barty

This bench is made with Jatoba, veneered Mendocino Cypress panels and has a hand woven seat of seagrass. It was designed with two main functions in mind. First, it was to house the end leaves for the Coston Dining table and second, the couple for whom it was built wanted to provide people with a place to sit down and remove their shoes when entering the house. Rather than jamming the leaves into a closet, up in the attic or down in the basement when not in use, they simply sit parralel inside the bench whose seat is hinged and are easily accessed when it is time for the bigger dinner parties. The panels are finished with shellac and the Jatoba with oil.
