Sushi Set
by: Taimi Barty

The inspiration for the design of these sushi plates came from the wood itself. I met a walnut grower from the central valley of California who had these beautiful pieces milled from his own farm four years ago. In particular, this wood contains the grafting line between the California Black walnut and the English Brown walnut. The slight curves help enhance the rare grain patterns and were made with round bottom Japanese planes. In terms of function, the groove at the top of the plates hold the chopsticks for ease and elegant presentation. A parquetry technique that incorporates the wood from each of the plates is utilized to create the pattern on the serving platter.
